Imogen is a study in contradictions. In most cases, to most people, she's extremely emotionally guarded. There are very few people in the world that have been offered a glimpse into Imogen's life. Even her former friends didn't know much about her, they were aware of her various likes and dislikes and they were fairly certain Imogen probably talked about them when they weren't around but other than that she was a blank canvas. Imogen suffers from the typical lost child syndrome often displayed by children who come from dysfunctional homes. As a kid she sought the privacy of her own company to be away from the family chaos and developed a rich fantasy life, into which she withdrew. She daydreamed, read a lot of books, played games which required imagination and wasted a frightening amount of time setting up elaborate games of dominoes. She dealt with hers rather horrifying reality by pretending to be someone else, anywhere other than at home with a father who ignored her and a mother who had no choice not to. Now Imogen denies she has any feelings until the unfortunate time come where she displays an inappropriate emotional reaction, most likely at an inopportune time. For the most part she doesn't bother getting upset because she knows she doesn't have anyone to go to that would really care to help her sort out her problems. Imogen has grown up to find herself, for the most part, unable to publicly feel and suffers from very low self-esteem. She is absolutely terrified of intimacy to the point where she'll purposely sabotage any potential relationship, whether it's romantic or platonic.
Imogen has poor communication skills, cultivated by her voluntary solitude and perfected by the amount of time she spent around her peers unable to communicate fully due to not being able to completely speak and comprehend English. Imogen is very withdrawn and shy; she's become socially isolated because that's the only way she knows to be safe from getting hurt. It helps that she knows her behavior is damaging and she's fully aware of how dysfunctional she is. On the bright side, her loneliness was conducive to both creative and spiritual pursuits. Photography gives her an opportunity to hide behind characters of sorts when Imogen has to present her work to the public. Despite all this Imogen expects the few people she knows to be there for her exactly when she wants them to be, to always say the right thing to make her feel better and to know instinctively what she needs. She'll tell someone to go away but is actually quite upset when they acquiesce to her request. Imogen is selfish beyond reason, possibly because she's used to only looking out for herself but more likely because she just is.
If there’s one thing Imogen is proficient at it’s lying, even though her actions leave her with the feeling that no one can be trusted if she can't even trust herself to tell the truth. Her constant brooding, resentment and often inappropriate anger hasn't done much to endear her to anyone. Imogen is often highly confused and on edge due to lack of sleep and the nightmares which are bound to occur if she does manage to drift off. Not many people know what Imogen is really like because she hides behind a facade of detached confidence. She refuses to let anyone in on how pathetically vulnerable she is, because she knows they'll find a way to take advantage of her and exploit her insecurity. At least, that's what she would do. When it comes to certain things her ambition is nearly unparalleled, she's willing to do anything, or hurt anyone, to sell even one piece of her photography. However, in many other facets of her life and personality Imogen falls short. She doesn't possess the charisma and way with words required to be extremely successful. She isn't one for clever quips and double entendres and she certainly isn't as eloquent, or pretentious, as many of her classmates. Imogen is so used to being ignored she'll put up with much more than most other people as long as she's being given the attention she feels she deserves.
At first glance Imogen seems vapid and self absorbed, which she is to a point. She's quiet because she has poor social skills but also because it's not often that she has something incredibly worth while to say. In general she's perfectly fine with letting people believe she's stupid, in fact, she usually plays it up. She subscribes to 'the stupider they think I am, the less likely they are to suspect me' school of thought. Imogen has the arrogance of a child who grew up knowing she has more money than you. She relishes the fact she'll never have to put in a hard days work, partly because she knows if she wanted a job she could go work for her father's publishing firm and partly because she's fairly certain it would be difficult to find a job if not for her connections. Imogen isn't much more than a kid with every material possession she could ever ask for and a pretty face.
Parents Relationship Strained, yet generally pleasant. There was no real love between Pete and Marianne, they liked each other and there was mutual respect in the relationship, but love never factored into the equation. They were both rich and their family were friends. Once they got married they had a child as soon as possible. After that the pressure was off, they didn't have to pretend to be something they weren't anymore. Once Imogen was born they lived more like roommates and mutual care takers than lovers. Even though Marianne didn't love Pete, she hated knowing that he didn't love her.
Relationship with parents: Imogen and her father haven't had an easy history. She doesn't hate her father, nothing like that, but she did resent him for the way she was treated as a child. Imogen felt like she lost two parents when her mother died. If her father chose to start a civil conversation with her, Imogen responded accordingly, first of all because she wanted to avoid confrontation and second of all because she still hoped her father might decide she's worth talking to on a regular basis one of these days. There's none of the `I talk, you listen` nonsense that people seem to think is the main dynamic in a normal rich family. When she was youngers he was very afraid of her father; Pete had a short temper and Imogen asked a lot of questions. Her father would apologize almost immediately after lashing out, but the damage was done for a while. Imogen almost feels silly when she tells people why she disliked her father at times, when she was older they hardly ever fought, she was free to do what she wanted, and Pete would give her money any time she asked for it. Other people were much worse off and they didn't carry on about it. Admittedly, Pete was ill equipped to raise a child, even if said child preferred to read and play quiet imagination games as opposed to running around the house like a maniac. She was much too old to be stuck with a ten year old to deal with all on her own. Even though they live in the same house Imogen and her father rarely talk, it's the best way to maintain a friendly relationship and not have to deal with each other all at the same time.
Mother relationship:Imogen's relationship with her mother couldn't be any different, though occasionally, she was just as selfish as Pete. When they would travel together she would leave her with well paid strangers for weeks at a time. Imogen couldn't usually communicate with them because of obvious language barriers and she would be left without any one share her worries with. She was gone for so long she was sure she would never come back, but lo and behold she always did. Usually Marianne was much kinder than that. She taught Imogen things she wouldn't have learned otherwise, like always make the best of a bad situation and cherish animals because their souls are much more pure than a human's. Imogen still doesn't eat meant and she can't imagine why anyone would want to harm an animal. For the first ten years of her life, her mother was her primary caretaker, teacher and friend. In the end, Marianne was nearly as neglectful as Pete, she loved Imogen, but she may have loved her freedom just a little bit more. Despite that, When Marianne died Imogen was absolutely devastated. She still doesn't know if she can forgive her because she did leave her and this time she's never coming back.
